What
is a Severe Macaw?
The Severe (Ara severa), also called the Chestnut-fronted Macaw, is the
largest of the Mini Macaws and a member of the parrot family, (Psittacine).
Approximately 15 inches long and weighing around 400 grams; this is a
'big' Macaw in a little body. The body feathers are forest green with
'accents' of teal and red on the feathers of the wing and tail. Dark brown
facial feathers create individual patterns that are unique to each bird
and, like all Macaws, the Severe has a bare face patch. It is very common
to see Severe Macaws playing on their backs in the lap of their favorite
human. Severes are polished acrobats, needing lots of exercise, and love
to dangle, flapping vigorously, from any device that will hold them; I
recommend a 'Boing' for one of their toys. This smaller Macaw will be
just as exciting a companion as it's larger cousins but size makes it
considerably easier to care for. Severes love to chew so give them plenty
of wood toys, cardboard, (paper towel holders, egg cartons), scrap wood,
pinecones and Eucalyptus branches to enrich their environment and occupy
their busy beaks. Nevertheless, a Severe needs a large cage because of
its' long tail and active nature. Another good investment is a shower
perch so that you can include your bird in your daily bath routine. All
parrots need some time with their people each day and this goes double
for Severes. Daily handling, frequent showers and lots of stimulation
will insure that your Severe stays sweet. A Severe Macaw can be exceptionally
affectionate and a good talker but a loving/firm hand is needed. A Severes'
need for structure may not make it a good candidate for a home with children
but this is a generalization; it really depends on the particular child
and bird in question. All Macaws, regardless of their size require that
their caretakers be consistent and realistic in their training. Severes
can be good talkers but this very attribute means that they have a 'voice'
and are easily encouraged to be loud. Many times we unwittingly cause
the very behaviors that we wish to discourage so bird owners need to educate
themselves. Fortunately, there are many fabulous books available today
with most of the information needed to achieve a happy home with Macaws;
the experts who are offering babies for sale can demonstrate the practical
handling of a pet parrot. Always purchase a parrot from a reputable dealer
who specializes in domestically raised baby birds. Like most parrots,
Macaws live a very long time and the effort you put forth in the beginning
will serve you well throughout your lifetime together.
