The Ten Commandments of Parrot Ownership… (A parrot's point of view)

1. My life can last as long as yours; be sure your commitment to me can stand the test of time.

2. Be patient, I am trying to understand you and your expectations; cross species communication is tricky.

3. Place your trust in me and be affectionate, it's crucial to our relationship.

4. Don't be angry with me for long; always be fair and consistent.

5. Talk to me and take me with you when you can, you are my family, my flock. My understanding is more than you realize and I need the stimulation. You have your work, your entertainment, your friends and I have only you.

6. Be aware that however you treat me I will never forget it.

7. Physical violence will not 'teach' me, remember, the only weapon I have is my powerful beak. Violence is a lose/lose situation and we must not go there.

8. If you want me to share your life with enthusiasm be aware of my intelligence and keep me healthy with fun toys, new sights and excellent food. I depend on you for the quality of my life.

9. I will change throughout my lifetime, just as you will. Old parrots have fine qualities too so remember your commitment and make arrangements for my old age.

10. Respect me, make me your lifetime friend, treat me with kindness, and perhaps we'll meet again at that Rainbow Bridge in Paradise.
